Five mistakes to avoid with your wedding flowers

Wedding flowers are our speciality at Texas Flower ‘Rangers and we absolutely love the challenge and creativity of bringing your vision to life for your special day. There are many aspects to planning wedding flowers, from the bridal bouquet to the table arrangements and, for Jewish weddings, the Chuppah. And with the flowers featuring in all of your wedding photos you want to make sure you get them right! Here are the top five mistakes to avoid in order to make your day run smoothly:

  1. DIY disaster

Flower arranging looks easy but it requires a high level of skill and experience. The last thing you want is for your bridal bouquet to look like it was made by an amateur. Remember, it’s going to be immortalised in all of your wedding photos! You wouldn’t try to make your own dress, why ruin your hands and nails spending hours arranging your wedding flowers? Plus, some flowers are sensitive to temperature and need cold room storage. There are so many reasons to leave it to the experts… avoid the stress and focus your energy on enjoying your special day

  1. Leaving it too late

Never leave your flowers to the last minute! It’s a good idea to meet with your florist around the same time as you book your venue and have your dress designed, to allow for proper planning and preparation. For larger weddings, consult with your florist at least 6 months before the event. For smaller weddings we recommend at least 6 weeks’ lead time.

  1. Vague descriptions

There’s nothing more unnerving than designing arrangements with an unclear brief. Always bring as many inspirational pictures and textures as you can to your initial consultation so we have a clear idea of what you want from the start. We also recommend bringing fabric samples from your dress, pictures of the bridal party dresses, your wedding invitations and anything else that can communicate the theme you are going for.

  1. Being rigid and uncompromising

It’s important to keep an open mind and be flexible when it comes to your wedding flowers. Your florist is an artist and a specialist – trust them and allow for some substitution if needed. Sometimes the flowers you want just aren’t in season or, try as they might, your florist cannot get the flowers you want. But if you remain open and trust your florist you can still have a breathtaking arrangement!

  1. Scents or no scents

Choosing you favourite perfumed flowers. for the tables might seem like a great idea but it’s not for everyone. Heavily scented flowers could offset allergies and strong perfume can overpower the food. If you have your heart set on perfumed flowers, speak to your florist about your best options.
